If you open today’s Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung you’ll find a wonderfully written article by Lilli Ann Vorbeck about my work as pianist and concert creator.
I had the chance to talk with her about my ambivalent relationship with the term ‘concert design,’ which in my personal perception feels superficial at first sight. However, to me, it’s a crucial concept that challenges us as artists to question our work and to ask who we are and to explore the role of music in today’s world. The nucleus of all this is always the music which itself is already strong enough. Thus, it‘s a matter of contextualisation and that‘s what‘s all about.
The article also touches on what classical music can be today: Describing my projects, from performing on broken instruments, to playing piano on busy streets in Congo, to creating grand moments in the Elbphilharmonie. Ultimately, it all comes back to one question: how can music create true encounters and connections?
These are the questions that constantly drive me and inspire me in the development of new concert formats.
